I asked ChatGPT for the best dentist in Tampa. It named five.
On November 3 I opened ChatGPT on my phone and typed the question a new patient types: best dentist in Tampa Florida. Twenty-seven seconds later it had named five practices and told me why each one was on the list. This is the recording, start to finish.
What ChatGPT actually did
It did not give me a map or a list of twenty. It gave me five, ranked, with one marked as its top overall pick. Before the list it explained its method in one sentence: it looked at patient reviews, reputation, services, and whether the practice offers personalized care, rather than relying on star ratings alone.
Then it wrote a reason for each one. The first was the comprehensive general and cosmetic option with strong feedback on communication. The second was the smaller, relationship-focused practice. The third was the family practice led by a third-generation dentist. The fourth was the one for families with children. The fifth was the established practice with advanced general dentistry training.
Review counts on the list ran from 64 to 997. A practice with 64 reviews sat one line below a practice with 997. Volume got them considered. It was not what got them picked.
Why this is worth 27 seconds of your time
Tampa has hundreds of dental practices. ChatGPT named five, and it will name roughly the same five to the next person who asks. There is no page two. A patient who asks this question and does not see your name has no reason to keep looking.
Look at what the five have in common. Each one has a sentence that AI can write about it: who it is for and what it does well. That sentence comes from the practice's reviews, its Google Business Profile, and the way its website describes its services. If those three sources do not agree on what your practice is, AI cannot write the sentence, so it does not write your name.
This is also why a 64-review practice can beat a 900-review practice. The smaller one had a clear identity in its reviews. Patients kept using the same words. AI read those words and repeated them.
The question to ask your agency
If you pay someone monthly for SEO, ask them one thing: which dentist does ChatGPT name for Tampa right now, and are we one of them? If the answer is a report about rankings and traffic, you have your answer. Rankings are how Google worked. This is how patients are starting to choose.

We ran this one prompt by hand so you could watch it happen. The free scan runs it, and four variations of it, across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, and shows you which ones name your practice. No login, no card. If the answer is none of them, the scan tells you what the five practices above have that you do not.
