AI skips eye care more than any other industry

In our Florida study, only 69.7% of AI queries for eye care services returned a named practice. That means nearly 1 in 3 patients who asks AI for an eye doctor gets nothing. No recommendation, no direction, no name. They're left to search on their own — and whoever they find next wins.

Two directories are controlling who AI recommends

Healthgrades and Zocdoc together drove 59% of AI citations for eye care practices in our study. That's not a diverse presence across the web — that's two gatekeepers. If your practice profile on either is incomplete, outdated, or missing, AI tools treat you as if you don't exist.

Google almost never triggers an AI Overview for eye care searches

Google's AI Overview appeared in only 4% of eye care queries — the lowest rate of any industry we tested. That means the usual playbook of optimizing your Google Business Profile gets you far less lift here. Patients who find you through AI are coming from other sources entirely.

Being on one AI platform means nothing for the others

98% of eye care practices in our study appeared on only one AI platform. ChatGPT and Gemini had zero overlap — not a single practice appeared in both. Visibility on one tool doesn't carry over. Each platform has its own idea of who to recommend, and most practices haven't figured out how to show up on any of them consistently.
